Holiday décor can add sparkle and festive charm to your home. Even if you are short on time, there are several quick and simple ways to get you in the holiday spirit. Here are some decorating ideas for Christmas:
1. Candy cane porch columns
Angelo Surmelis, host of HGTV’s “Rate My Space,” reminds everyone that holiday décor “doesn’t have to be expensive.” Shop at dollar stores and discount retailers for yards of inexpensive red ribbon. Opt for the plastic ribbon over the velveteen-style, as it will hold up better in rain, snow and other weather conditions. Wrap the red ribbon, candy cane style, around front porch columns or poles. The red will add a splash of holiday color to the front of your house. Front lawn lampposts can be wrapped as well. Add a pr-made red bow at the top of each column or the lamppost.
2. Custom grapevine swag
A 2-foot grapevine swag is a blank canvas and can be transformed into a simple Christmas decoration quickly. Decorate with silk poinsettia flowers, miniature ornaments and sprays/picks of holly berries. Attach items with florist wire or hot glue.
3. Garlands galore
Garlands and Christmas decorating go hand in hand. From the traditional Christmas tree garlands in silver and gold to old-fashioned popcorn strands, garlands are a quick and simple way to add a bit of holiday spirit to any room. 4. Popcorn garland. Strands of popcorn and cranberries can help transform a room into a homespun holiday dream. Stringing garlands of popcorn and cranberries can be a family event. Light a fire, play some holiday music and be sure to pop enough extra popcorn for snacking while you create the garlands. Hang the completed strands on your Christmas trees or loop around a wreath. 5. Red bead garland with candy canes. Try hanging red beaded garland over a decorative mirror or doorway. Attach with thumbtacks so the garland drapes into five sections. Hang a single candy cane at the dip of each section. If hanging over a doorway, be sure to hang it so no one will hit their head on the garland.
6. Ribbon and card garland. Select a Christmas ribbon from your local craft store that is 1.5 inches in width. Hang along a stair banister or across the top of your window frames. As you receive holiday greeting cards from family and friends, tent the cards over the ribbon. You may want to attach with staples so the cards do not slip off. The staples can be removed easily after the holidays so the cards can be reused for other craft projects.
